2018 Sightings Map

The 2018 Morel season has left us! The first sighting of the season was reported in the early part of March and the last was reported in June. All in all it was a good season for most morel hunters even with the odd spring weather which did create havoc for a lot of folks. The Great Morel’s recap in detail of the 2018 Morel season can be found here – 2018 summary of the various regions. The Great Morel would like to thank each and everyone of you who have contributed this season to help make the sightings maps the place to report! May everyone have wonderful off-season and don’t forget to visit The Morel Store for those special occasions and gift ideas for the Shroomer in your life!

If you have issues with the latest sightings markers, try un-checking a month in the bottom left corner of the map and then rechecking the box next to the month. It should refresh correctly.

There are plenty of features on the new interactive map – zoom, filter by month, full screen and more. Below the map you can find a table listing of the 20 most recent sightings along with images and notes if they were sent – there is a “more pages” button at the bottom of this table.

was pleasantly surprised when I found these. They are small and a bit dried out, found under dead elm tree, flat area with violets grasses and dandelions.

Not much rain, doesn’t help the black morels. Looked for over 3 hours extensively on Thursday 5/24 and could only find false morels everywhere I went. After a rainfall there could be major growth coming soon.

Much dryer spring early on, not much rain to help out the black morels. White morels should be popping up after this weekend’s rain.
Found a total of around a couple dozen black morels in our spots, not as plentiful as last year.
Pheasantbacks are already up, and should be picked as soon as possible. The younger the better, and they get too tough when they’re old.

Morel at home:   We've had a couple of hot, mid-80's days after a week of cold and damp. Found this one while mowing the yard. Just out of the yard in a flower bed.

We purchased our house last year that has 11 acres of woods. I tried to search last year but the land was neglected for many years and the leaves and debris made it impossible to see anything. We cleaned up quite a bit of it and control burned the excess leaves last summer. This evening my husband and I decided to go for a walk in the woods to see how our fern gully was looking and as I was walking I caught a glimpse of something and went over to see what was coming up and to my surprise it was a bunch of morels!
Weather has been real wet and on the cooler side at night only 40's-50s. They were growing in a area that did not get a lot of sun, soil was a mix of rotting wood, leaves with loose soil underneath. Will be going out looking for more tomorrow.

This season has been very late, I'm normally done looking by now. I believe the mushrooms should be showing up on the North side now. Almost everything I have found up to Tuesday has been on the top and South facing. Last week I found a mixture of Grays and blondes, but mostly grays.

58 yellows! All good sized and most fresh... Most were found with decent shade, moist soil, and at the top slopes of hills near a lake. None were found around excessive plant growth on the ground. May 18th after a good few days of rain and one day of cool temps in the mid 50s.

Slim Morel Pickings...Two morels (not so fresh, but passable) found on outskirts of St. James Farm along tree edge line off Butterfield Road; conditions have been wet and temps perfect – should be prime flowering, but these were the first I found…
